It started out a cold, cloudy, busy morning. Putting last minute details together was quite the experience! As noon approached, the sun was out and my heart pounded with excitement, anticipation, and also the unknown.

Sitting next to me was my dear little 6 year old friend, Luca. He really wanted to be there and had helped his mom make the sign he wore around his neck that proclaimed, "Catholic Kids Love Religious Freedom!"
We were at the Stand Up for Religious Freedom rally, Los Angeles. This was my first time attending a rally protesting something the President of the United States had done or intended to do. Not only did I attend, but I also assisted Jeff White and Cheryl Conrad in organizing it.

How did I become so involved?
I had been a comfortable prolife person most of my life, one of those "It's against my morals, but I can't impose my morality on another person" types. The last 4 years changed that! I started hearing about this pro-abortion politician, now our President. Why were people so upset? What is abortion? Why would I know that I would not have an abortion, but also not want to stop someone from having one?
A couple of years ago, someone said, "If a woman is pregnant with a non-human, a blob of cells, then it doesn't matter if she removes it or not. BUT if a woman is pregnant with a human, then that changes everything. We should protect that human, not be okay if his/her life is ended!" That was said by my now dear friend, Greg Grimm, of CBR.
I had to research, find out the truth. When does human life start? If someone is a human, and they are being killed, am I really okay with that.
Human life begins at conception. Medical testimony and science clearly state this. How do we look away and do nothing when innocent human lives are ended by the thousands every day? I cannot.
So in January, when US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a mandate under the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), requiring all employer health plans to provide free contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortion-inducing drugs regardless of moral or religious objections, I was alarmed! First Amendment rights are being trampled. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof . . ." People fled other countries from religious persecution to come to this free land. Now, this HHS Mandate tramples those rights. I had to do something! The United States of America is a great, diverse country. Standing up for the protection of our long held value and right of religious freedom is something I, and thousands of others across the country, had to do that March 23!
As Luca and I sat there in the hot sun, listening to the many inspiring speakers, the words of Fr.John Higgins stirring the crowd with excitement, "We are for people. Freedom of Religion. We are not Anti-Something. We are FOR People!" Little Luca looked up at me and said, "And for the lil' babies and their mommies." Yes, Luca, we are for all people! And for you dear little boy, and all the youth, for your future. Lord, have mercy on us. God bless America, the land that I love very much!

Proverbs 31:8-9

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
